The former national deputy and former ambassador to Spain Ricardo Alfonsín, along with other leaders of FORJA and Libres del Sur, are preparing a tribute to commemorate the 41st anniversary of the elections that marked the recovery of democracy in Argentina. Tomorrow, a ceremony will take place during which a floral tribute will be made at the grave of former president Raúl Alfonsín, a prominent radical leader, at the Recoleta Cemetery at 4:00 PM.
The historic elections took place on October 30, 1983, where Raúl Alfonsín defeated the Peronist candidate, Ítalo Luder, despite forecasts not favoring his victory. Alfonsín received 51.7% of the votes, while Luder reached 40.1%. This triumph was fundamental in the process of returning to democracy in Argentina, after several years of military dictatorship.
At that time, the Military Junta, led by Reynaldo Bignone, planned to relinquish power six months after the elections. However, popular pressure and the urgency to end the dictatorship accelerated Alfonsín's assumption of power, who was sworn in as president on December 10, 1983. His term was marked by his commitment to the defense of human rights and the consolidation of democratic institutions in the country.
